Preventing Frozen Pipes

Preventing frozen pipes can help you avoid a lot of damage. Most households in colder climates are aware that a pipe freezing is one of the worst issues a homeowner has to deal with. Water expands as it freezes putting a great amount of pressure on whatever is containing it. No matter how strong the container holding it is, water expansion can cause pipes to break.  This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break. Luckily, installing snap disc thermostat switches can be an easy way to prevent freeze on any exposed pipe. Thermostat Switches Prevent Pipe Freeze

Heat tape is an inexpensive solution that will give you peace of mind. However, heat tape should only be used in conjunction with a temperature switch. A temperature switch will make sure that the heat tape only turns on when the pipe gets cold. This will save you power and make the heat tape safer. To use heat tape, wrap it around the pipe you want to keep warm. Wire it to the temperature switch, then make sure it has power. That’s all there is to it! You’ll want to check your heat tape once a year to make sure it still works.

You will want to use a temperature switch with a pipe mount. This will ensure that the heat tape only powers on when the pipe itself gets too cold.

Senasys offers a variety of pipe mount thermostat switches. Available in our auto reset, manual reset and epoxy sealed series, the pipe mount thermostats have become a popular item for many of our customers. Typically when mounting the switch to the outer diameter of the pipe, the switch is sensing a fluid temperature or air temperature as it passes through. The snap disc reacts quickly to the change and opens or closes the circuit. We offer a variety of materials to fit application requirements including aluminum and brass.
